Recession= cutbacks and layoffs -OR- aquire and reward top talent NOW

I was chatting with a lady at the gym this morning….its 8am; we are racing through our makeup and prep for the 8:30 train….

She tells me her new job is like being in a parking lot and that she took it to ensure she was earning money and keeping busy….she lost her last job due to recession related cutbacks, she winks and says” I lost my job because this women who was hired as our new VP hated me, she used the recession as an excuse to get rid of me…sometimes I wonder if this recession is just an excuse for too many things?”

As a recruiter what I hear most sounds rather negative and unpromising, NOT GOOD EMPLOYER BRANDING, THAT’S FOR SURE…..”we let her go because of budget cuts”; “we have to down size to adjust to the recession”…..”I took the job to hold me over, what else have you got on the go, anything better?”…..”They over spent, over hired and had an inflated sense of where their futures where going to lead them” or “They made bad decisions and thought no one would notice.” or ” They kept too many underperformers or hired to many VPs and thought we could improve their contributions by repurposing and redeploying people else where”……

What ever the reason, the truth remains, companies are cutting back…

I am sure people are diagnosing where they went wrong above and beyond external economic factors.

I haven’t heard enough about how they are preparing for the losses they will face for encouraging talented new hires to take pay cuts or for failing to reward top performers whom they decided to retain….

Many recruiting experts are reaching out to their top talent to make sure they have every one in their network ready to go for when things bounce back. This is a perfect opportunity for recruiters to build strong pipelines of passive talent (candidates who are employed and not aggressively seeking new opportunities).

Progressive employers are recruiting now, more than ever before. They are working on their brands, blogs and delivering the message that “they are good places to work” . They are taking stock and building the path for a strong recovery……

I’m not sure that,”we aren’t hiring” is the best message to put out there??…

How about, “we are interested in talking to top talent and getting to know who you are??”…..”We are improving rewards and recognition for every one who works for us, we welcome your ideas”

Well….there’s a bit of a rant in this blog……bottom line is
Carpe Diem….recession or no recession……..

I am the founder of i-identify inc., a Toronto-based recruiting company, founded in 2013. My research uncovers full-time, interim and contract professionals who are leaders in their respective fields. My early work was focused on the emerging tech - sector, and later expanded into retail and consumer packaged goods technologies. In the past five to six years I have broadened my expertise to include Canada's public and not-for-profit sectors, working on assignments as far north as Iqaluit, uncovering talent as senior as Deputy Ministers, Commissioners and executives at the C level. I've become a search generalist who specializes in identifying great talent.
