So, you aren’t on LinkedIn or Twitter!

I had lunch this week with an entrepreneur who is no where to be seen on the net. The guy is successful, owns a few companies…nothing?

I was introduced to him through e-mails and was told of a start up he had on the go. His partners are on the web site, but he isn’t…he’s the CEO

I kept thinking I spelled his name wrong………being a recruiter, I panic, how the heck to I prepare for lunch?…I’ll have questions??…Lot’s of them..This is a guy I can’t spy on, can’t get any scoop on, no press, no Sedar reports, no resume (LOL)………..no face book……..NOTHING

So I confessed at lunch , here I am; some one who can search engine flip, Google this way to Sunday and, I can’t find the guy? So I asked, “Why aren’t you any where on the internet?”

He said simply, I own too many private companies, I don’t need the brand and I have no ego…..and I don’t want any one knowing what I am up to.

What a concept: don’t need the brand and have no ego…and has lots of money….sounds kind of like a Zen millionaire to me.

I realized at lunch how many times I have sat in a room with some one and known more than what is conversationally appropriate about them. I ask questions, expecting to hear what I already know.

What a great wake up call! It’s truly refreshing to ask questions and have ZERO information to predicate the questions upon.

The conversation becomes more engaging and real. My questions were more probing and thought through as a result. Heck, I didn’t even know where this man grew up?

Made me think of wanting to set a precedent for the next time I meet some one for business or networking by saying, “how about we abstain from Google and LinkedIn Profiles. Let’s start fresh?”…more often than not you start by saying, “so, I read xyz about you”

I am certain as we all become more and more reliant on social networking on the net……there will possibly emerge a new crop of people who take them selves off the grid system…what are the consequences of not being on Face Book , Twitter or LinkedIn?

It’s apt to get too complex for a 10minute blog…but the thought of deciding NOT to be on the net is NOT an option for most of my network.

It’s a pretty brave way to interact and grow your business in this net focused era.

    Carmen,

Very interesting. I have to say that in our line of work it’s very rare to sit across from a person who has zero digital footprint (and frankly – would we want to be?).. I would typically be very sceptical about someone who is nowhere to be found on the web, but your post makes me think..

    Igor.

  2. It’s tough when this happens, it just makes you become more questioning with the individual and more honest with yourself and the person you are engaging about what you want to know about them.
    Thanks for reading
