When Jim Crocker and Karen McElroy of Boardroom Metrics hit my radar, I was wowed.

They’ve developed a highly successful and progressive business model that promotes accomplished executives through blogs, twitter streams, videos and targeted networking.

With Boardroom Metrics, the whole notion of interim management transforms into something sexy, dynamic and bold – that’s how their whole team does things.

And so, here we are, i-identify inc.’s first Guest Blog. I’m thrilled that it’s with Jim and Karen of Boardroom Metrics

i-inc.: Let’s start with a sentence about Boardroom Metrics

BM: Boardroom Metrics is a talent agency for post-corporate executives, promoting them as interim managers, coaches and consultants to corporate clients.

i-inc: What was the catalyst that launched Boardroom Metrics from an idea to a going concern?

BM: Jim had done interim management on his own for over 10 years and kept getting calls from ex-executives to see if they could work together. One day he got a call from a fellow who’d run Roy Thomson Hall, Massey Hall, The Hockey Hall of Fame and the CN Tower. Seeing that someone like that needed help getting his next gig was a serious eye-opener! That’s when we knew there was important demand for our services.

i-inc: Boardroom Metrics calls its interim executives Accomplished Executives, what makes someone accomplished in your eyes?

BM: Three things make an executive accomplished – a track record, followers/allies and the ability not just to lead a team but to contribute to one. Lone wolves don’t last long at Boardroom Metrics.

i-inc: Boardroom Metrics has an outstanding social media presence (like 22,000 Twitter followers!) which is interesting because people presume it’s a young person’s platform, how have you been able to attract such a mature following?

BM: Success in our business is all about differentiation. Every leader we meet tells us the same thing – that they’re a great change agent, team builder and strategist – and that they can all take any business to the next level. So if everyone can do that, how does anyone ever stand out? We help them see that there is no better way than social media to clearly articulate what makes them different and get their specific expertise in front of lots of prospective clients – very often at a point in time when there is a real need. Even CEO’s use Google!

i-inc: I hear you’re opening in new countries this year, tell us about that

BM: Yes, we’re opening in Mexico. Geographic expansion is a key goal this year. Mexico is a large, rapidly developing market with a solid base of Accomplished Executives. And Canadians are respected and well received. Finding the right person to lead a new market is key and that’s what we’ve found in Mexico. We’d love to find people in other markets too.

i-inc: What’s the most exciting thing about a day in a life at Boardroom Metrics?

BM: Although we’ve been around for three years, we’re really still a start-up. So every day is different – and exciting. Our job descriptions are pretty broad and we’ve learned enough about the challenges that post-corporate executives face to write a book. Literally!

i-inc: What keeps you up at night?
BM: Which night? Our biggest challenge is creating a steady stream of work for our Accomplished Executives. We’re in the lead generation business. So this year we’ve made a major commitment to inbound marketing.

i-inc: What should companies expect from an Accomplished Executive as opposed to one that works full-time?

BM: There are lots of good reasons to look at an interim Accomplished Executive. No baggage. Fast up to speed. Perfectly match the skills you require with your needs at any point in time. Few of the traditional employment – and unemployment costs. Mature. Appreciative. Finally, a Boardroom Metrics Accomplished Executive is part a larger team – so they have access to other talented Accomplished Executives if/when the need arises.

i-inc: Any last words?
First, congratulations on starting i-identify. We know you will be hugely successful. And second, thanks for this opportunity. Boardroom Metrics is unique in the area of executive transition, interim management and management consulting. We appreciate this opportunity to tell our story.

I am the founder of i-identify inc., a Toronto-based recruiting company, founded in 2013. My research uncovers full-time, interim and contract professionals who are leaders in their respective fields. My early work was focused on the emerging tech - sector, and later expanded into retail and consumer packaged goods technologies. In the past five to six years I have broadened my expertise to include Canada's public and not-for-profit sectors, working on assignments as far north as Iqaluit, uncovering talent as senior as Deputy Ministers, Commissioners and executives at the C level. I've become a search generalist who specializes in identifying great talent.
