We’re Here For a Good Time Not a Long Time – Work & Commitment

The chorus of  Canadian band Trooper’s epic song, “We’re Here For a Good Time, Not a Long Time, is truly coloured by the lyrics that follow it’s name sake, ” have a good time, the sun can’t shine everyday”.

In my years of recruiting since 1997, candidates who have faced multiple down sizes, and short term employment let-downs have said to me, ” I just want a place I can hang my hat and stay a while”  or worse ” I’d like to find a place to work where I can retire some day”.

For years I have sat and listened with out judgment, feeling the pain of job seekers who yearn for long term employment, as though it’s the ideal, the ultimate career achievement.

What about employers? Is that what they yearn for? Do they want all of their employees to stay for a long time? No, they want their employees to make impact, drive results, have fun, create change, be intrepreneurs. That has nothing to do with time, it has to do with results! When there’s no results, employers make changes and so do employees. Let’s forget the notion of Long Time and shift to Good Time, shall we?

The average life span of a CEO is 18months, a trip through Google will confirm the stat. The highest impact employees, often contribute as drivers, innovators, creatives and sparks of energy. They add life to teams and they inject value to the initiatives they take on at work.

Next time you take a new job, or hire a new candidate, think about this. What are opportunities here to make a real difference and what can I do in setting foundations for success? Think less about length of time and more about the quality. Good times lead to more good times and more sunny days.

I am the founder of i-identify inc., a Toronto-based recruiting company, founded in 2013. My research uncovers full-time, interim and contract professionals who are leaders in their respective fields. My early work was focused on the emerging tech - sector, and later expanded into retail and consumer packaged goods technologies. In the past five to six years I have broadened my expertise to include Canada's public and not-for-profit sectors, working on assignments as far north as Iqaluit, uncovering talent as senior as Deputy Ministers, Commissioners and executives at the C level. I've become a search generalist who specializes in identifying great talent.
