Waste and Muda and other thoughts on Productive Networking

I was reading one of my favourite Blogs http:www.booleanblackbelt.com it’s an incredible resource for recruiting ideas, Glen Cathey publishes it.

He speaks of an age old style of recruiting called “candidate pipelining” and presents a case against getting out and meeting candidates proactively as “Muda” . Muda  is the Japanese word for waste, it relates to any human activity which absorbs resources but creates no value.

Moments before this read, I had just reflected upon my frequent networking coffees and lunches and how often I have socialized with talented referrals for the sake of reaching out to help as well as expanding my horizons, and increasing my knowledge of different talent pools and businesses. Thankfully, when a client calls with a tough search, very often I have met people who work in that space. People I can call for referrals, ideas and possibly an opportunity. Knowledge is power and we learn from others.

I have read and re-read this blog a few times and Glen has received many comments from those of us who challenged his Blog. He gracefully handled his feedback, which I appreciate.

He has a point though and waste of any kind has no value.

Lunches and coffees and meeting take time and often money. There is a significant amount of production time used towards networking and lunching in the course of any one’s day.

As the economy starts to recover I think it will bode well for many of us in Human Capital industries or in positions of Hiring Authority to think about his paradigm and to take some time to reflect on the differences between what he calls Just-In-Time Inventory over Work-In-Process Inventory. Commoditized as the word inventory sounds, the contacts you have in LinkedIn and in your OutLook or CRM or ATS do have that element.

Glen has a compelling case that applies to more than just recruitment extending into any kind of engagement between individuals or companies.

I highly recommend his blog and always look forward to the way he shares his industry insights and tips.

There’s nothing like being challenged by someone else’s perspective to get your mind going in a new direction.

I am the founder of i-identify inc., a Toronto-based recruiting company, founded in 2013. My research uncovers full-time, interim and contract professionals who are leaders in their respective fields. My early work was focused on the emerging tech - sector, and later expanded into retail and consumer packaged goods technologies. In the past five to six years I have broadened my expertise to include Canada's public and not-for-profit sectors, working on assignments as far north as Iqaluit, uncovering talent as senior as Deputy Ministers, Commissioners and executives at the C level. I've become a search generalist who specializes in identifying great talent.
