Vacation,Staycation, we have to truly power-down when we take time off

I felt it over two weeks, sleeplessness, typos, losing things I would never lose, grabbing my water to take a sip…realising I had already finished the bottle and tossed it into the recycle bin, forgetting to e-mail people back……..the signs were clear….I needed a break………….so I took one, day one day off the grid system…ahhh…. then, I checked the crackberry……day 2 of my staycation , driving to Sandbanks….thumb typing deals to closure, setting up interviews……..I’d left every one what they needed to make things happen with out me…..and I’m thinking, it’s a car ride…….but no sooner did I realise, work brain is not vacation brain….I wasn’t resting, chilling out….letting my mind go………I returned to work…..feeling restless and cranky

I started to read up on what happens when you truly turn off the cell phone, let the mind be, turn down what yoga teachers called Monkey Mind…………..and truly rejuvinate…..your brain rests, your cortisol levels lower, you lighten the load and become more boyant……you set the ground for returning to work with more energy, increased enthusiasm, your mind wanders less and you are able to be more present………….

The net result, you take time off work and you perform better when you return……it’s like weight training, you have to rest and let the muscle fibers rebuild after being torn.

So, it’s summer and it’s hot, the sun is shining, if any of you are taking time off, set things up so you can truly power down, save some energy, build your reserves and rejuvinate.

I found a great link on jobs.net …it really rang home what a vacation does and how essential it is to take one, a real one – in Europe people take 6 weeks a year…minimum 24 days…….for some reason North Americans tend to celebrate people who skip vacation time choosing to work instead……from what this link portrays, less vacation equals lower production

I couldn’t agree with you more. I’ve tried taking a couple of long weekends or extended weekends over the summer. They don’t feel the same as taking a week-long vacation.

Of course, even when I’ve taken the full week off, it doesn’t feel restful when you have your Blackberry with you.

I limited myself to 15m per day to review emails quickly and *only* respond to the ones that were urgent. And I stuck to that… but, of course, I spent a few more hours during the day thinking about work, the other emails I read that the I didn’t reply to, etc. It wasn’t downtime at all.

One thing missing… Boot up time when you return.

When one of my team is on vacation, I mentally discount one day of productivity for each week they were gone when they return.

Great ‘blog, by the way. Long time reader, first time poster!

  2. Silu, like the equation and thanks for gettting involved!
1 week = 1 day of productivity lost (or used to catch up)
    Makes perfect sense
    Have a good weeekend
